           1 ½" x 6" (for pen pocket)
Fusible interfacing: 19" x 10 ½"
     (Deco Bond works well)
Fusible interfacing: 21 ¼" x 10 ¾"
     (Deco Bond works well)
Muslin: 10 x 10 ½" Muslin: 13" x 10 ¾"

Instructions:

Fuse the interfacing to the wrong side of the fabric.

Turn back ¼" on each short side and stitch.

Fold back (right sides together) and press 2 ½" on each short side to form the flaps.  Do not stitch.

Fold the fabric to find the center (spine line).  Press lightly.  You now know where the front and center parameters of your cover lie.  At this point you can appliqué or otherwise decorate the front of the notebook cover.  If you are going to add the pen pocket, allow for this in your design.  You will also need approximately ½" top and bottom for the seam.

Fold the muslin to find the center (spine line). Press lightly.

Place the cover with the interfacing side down with the flaps turned so the right sides of the fabric on the flaps are together.  (The cover is interfacing side down and the flaps are interfacing side up.)

Match the center spine line of the muslin with the center spine line of the cover.  The right sides of the muslin and the right side of the fabric are together and the flaps are under the edges of the muslin.  Top and bottom edges are even.

Sew a scant ½" seam on the top and bottom.

Turn the cover right side out through the opening between the muslin and the fabric.

Fold/poke the flaps right side out.  Press the side and bottom seams flat.

Press ¼" under on all sides of the pen pocket.

Pin pocket to front of notebook cover and sew on three sides, leaving the top open.

Slide notebook into cover.

General directions for adjusting for different notebook sizes:

Measure the notebook, top to bottom and add 1 inch total for the top and bottom seams. i.e. 9 ½" notebook plus one inch = 10 ½"

Using a tape measure, measure the notebook from side to side (front, back and binding). e.g. a 6" notebook actually measures 13".  Add 1 inch total for the turned under ½" side seams and 5 inches total for the 2 ½" flaps, for a total width of 19".  Therefore your fabric and interfacing will be 10 ½" x 19".

The muslin piece is the same in top to bottom measurement as the notebook fabric.  Here it's 10 ½" and approximately one half the left to right measure.  It's about 10 inches.  The muslin is cut at 10 ½" by 10".

The optional pen pocket always stays the same at 1 ½" by 6"
